Boulder City Council Candidate Scorecards

By October 15, 2021No Comments

The Boulder Mountainbike Alliance, Community Cycles and Cyclists 4 Community are hosting the First-Ever Virtual Cycling Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. We have come together to help inform our respective constituencies on where each Boulder City Council candidate stands on the issues that matter to us, such as safety, theft, enforcement, and access. Ahead of this forum, we gave each candidate the opportunity to answer the following questions to create a scorecard. We realize that some of these questions can be very nuanced and the candidates’ responses may be incomplete. Candidate will have the opportunity to speak on these topics at the forum.

One can register to attend the forum here.

  1. Do you own a bike?
  2. If yes, do you use your bike for exercise?
  3. If yes, do you mountain bike?
  4. If yes, do you use your bike for commuting?
  5. If yes, do you use your bike for errands?
  6. If yes, do you use your bike for recreation?
  7. Are you a member of the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance?
  8. Are you a member of Community Cycles?
  9. Are you a member of Cyclists 4 Community or Wednesday Morning Velo?
  10. Do you support increased City funding for improved bike infrastructure, such as protected bike lanes, Green Streets and safer intersections?
  11. Are you willing to take street space away from motor vehicles and allocate toward alternate modes of transportation and other uses?
  12. Do you believe that bike theft is a serious, recurring issue in Boulder that needs to be dealt with greater attention and/or urgency?
  13. Do you believe that the goals of Vision Zero as currently articulated go far enough in creating a safe environment for cyclists?
  14. Do you believe local or state laws should be changed to increase penalties for crashes with cyclists?
  15. Do you support enhanced enforcement of the Vulnerable Road Users Law at the local and state levels?
  16. Do you believe there should be increased enforcement against cyclists who abuse or don’t follow local laws?
  17. A recent fatal crash (at 26th and Pearl Streets) in Boulder appears to have been caused by a driver turning right on red. Would you support additional restrictions on right-turn-on-red movements?
  18. Safety lights should be mandatory for bicycles on roadways in Boulder.
  19. Do you support allowing e-bikes on natural surface trails and singletrack?
  20. Do you support completion of the North Sky Trail, a vital multi-use connector trail between Boulder and Open Spaces to the north?
  21. Off-road gravel cycling and mountain biking are popular recreation activities for a variety of uses, including youth camps, high school mountain bike and use by adults. There are very few non-motorized natural surface trails that are open to bikes that extend from city limits to our Open Spaces. Do you think existing trails that connect to bike-friendly Open Spaces should be accessible to bike use, or should new trails be built to serve this need?
